Knots used in handloom weaving
Objectives: At the end of this lesson you shall be able to
• explain various knots used in handloom weaving.
Knots used in weaving Fig 3
In the handloom sector, different types of knots may be
used depending on the specific weaving technique, yarn
type, and desired effect. Some common types of knots
used in handloom weaving include:
1 Square knot: This is a basic knot that is commonly
used to tie two yarns together. It is made by tying an
overhand knot and then tying another overhand knot
in the opposite direction. (Fig 1)
Fig 1 4 Lark’s head knot: This is a knot that is commonly
used to attach a length of yarn to a loom or other
weaving tool. It is made by folding the yarn in half,
placing the folded end over the loom or tool, and then
pulling the two loose ends through the folded end to
create a loop. (Fig 4)

2 Over hand knot: is a simple yet essential knot used
primarily for securing warp threads, joining broken
threads, or finishing loose ends in weaving. It is one
of the most basic knots and is easy to tie. (Fig 2)

5 Half bow knot: This is a simple knot that is commonly
used to tie off the end of a length of yarn. It is made
by creating a loop with the yarn and tying a simple
knot with the one loose end. (Fig 5)

3 Weaver’s knot: This is a knot that is commonly used
to join two yarns of different thicknesses or materials.
It is made by tying a square knot and then tucking the
loose ends of the yarn back through the knot to create
a more secure join. (Fig 3)
